Splint
An oral exam is part of cleaning appointments. During the exam we will thoroughly check your gums, soft tissues, and teeth. If the teeth display abnormal wear we may recommend a splint or “nightguard”. Therapeutic Botox is also available, please see our information for Therapeutic Botox on this website.
Although the terms splint and nightguard are often used interchangeably, there is a difference in the material, fabrication process, and final appliance.
If teeth display simple wear with no physical symptoms, patients will often purchase an over-the-counter nightguard.
If significant wear is observed and in addition, physical symptoms, an office fabricated splint may be recommended. Physical symptoms can include frequent headaches, tight facial and neck muscles, or jaw pain.
