Dental Implants
When is an Implant needed?
Teeth can be lost under several circumstances. Trauma, extensive fracture, extensive decay, and failed root canal therapy are some reasons we may lose teeth. When the affected tooth has been removed, a space remains. Generally, if possible, it is recommended to replace the space with a prosthetic tooth. Placement of an implant is one of three options for missing tooth replacement. An implant may be described as a post placed in the bone at a missing tooth area. A crown is then placed on the implant.
What is the process for placement of an implant?
Much consideration and planning will be given to the proposed placement site. Bone levels, thickness, and density need to be evaluated. Proximity of the implant to landmark areas such as the sinus will be considered.
Generally, the area will be placed under anesthesia and the implant placed by a surgeon. Healing begins and the bone will integrate with the implant over the course of 3-6 months. After healing has been confirmed, a piece called an abutment will be attached to the top of the implant. This is also completed by your surgeon. A crown will then be fabricated and cemented to the abutment at our office.
What is the implant composed of?
Implants are fabricated from titanium metal.
