Dental Bridges
When is a bridge needed?
Teeth can be lost under several circumstances. Trauma, extensive fracture, extensive decay, failed root canal therapy are some reasons we may lose teeth. When the affected tooth has been removed, a space remains. Generally, if possible, it is recommended to replace the space with a prosthetic tooth. Placement of a bridge is one of three options for doing this. A bridge may be described as three crowns joined together.
What is the process for placement of a bridge?
The prep work for a bridge is similar to the prep work for a crown. It differs that rather than one tooth being prepped, two teeth are prepped, one on each side of the space. An impression is taken of the two prepped teeth with the space in between. The mould is sent to a lab for fabrication of the bridge and returned within one to two weeks. Temporary crowns placed at the prep appointment are removed and the bridge is cemented in permanently.
What material are bridges composed of?
Similar to crowns, bridges are fabricated from porcelain, metal (gold), or porcelain baked over metal.
